CLSC Dorval-Lachine-LaSalle has been caring for the mental health needs of youth in our community for nearly a decade, and we’re excited to be participating in the ACCESS Open Minds national research project. ACCESS Open Minds DLL serves more than 22,000 young people in the diverse boroughs of Dorval, Lachine, and LaSalle, including Ville Saint-Pierre. These communities in Montreal’s southwest are linguistically, economically, and ethnically diverse, and almost two-thirds of our clients are the children of recent immigrants.

Since the beginning of the ACCESS OM project, we have made several key changes to how our services are accessed. Our goal is to prioritize the needs of young people and their families, and to make sure their voices are heard. Integrating the ACCESS OM framework with the existing CLSC structure means we’re able to focus more on helping individual youth and ensure they don’t get lost in the system. We now follow through with young people up to the age of 25, and we are making family and carer involvement a priority. ACCESS Open Minds DLL is also working closely with community partners, and we’re committed to fighting mental health stigma at all levels by providing support and training within the CLSC and in the community. We believe everyone should be treated as a person, not as a problem.

One important partnership in the works is establishing a presence in youth-friendly spaces in our communities. We’re pleased to announce that we’ll be working with the Boys and Girls Club of LaSalle this fall, and we expect to host our official launch in Autumn 2017.
