Most people know about issues that affect physical health, like injuries or diseases. It’s easier to talk about what’s making them unwell when it’s a physical problem. But a lot of people find it more difficult to talk about mental health. People with mental health issues need and deserve help. That’s what ACCESS Open Minds-Ulukhaktok is all about. The project aims to get local youth talking about mental health issues, and connect them with the care they need to get better.

What are the ACCESS Open Minds-Ulukhaktok goals?

  1. To engage youth, family members, and all community members in all aspects of youth mental health care.
  2. To identify youth who need help with psychological distress or mental health issues.
  3. To ensure appropriate mental health care for youth, including after-care.
  4. To participate in the ACCESS Open Minds network, and share our learning with ACCESS OM sites across Canada.

How can you participate in ACCESS Open Minds-Ulukhaktok?

  1. Are you between the ages of 11 and 25 years? Perhaps you are experiencing a mental health problem or know someone who is. Or maybe you’re just interested in making a difference in the community. Contact the local ACCESS team members, Dana Illasiak and Annie Goose, to share your ideas and get involved.
  2. This page is yours to post artwork and photos taken in or around the community. Please get in touch with the local ACCESS team with any art work or stories that you would like posted.
  3. We’d like to collect short stories about your experiences with mental health issues – either as someone who lives with a mental health problem or who has an affected friend or family member. These stories could help community members start meaningful conversations about mental health.
